Hillside Senior Living will bring 164 units of much-needed affordable senior housing to the Inwood neighborhood of Upper Manhattan. The new ground-up U-shaped development is carved into a steeply sloping site and draws much of its inspiration from seasonal changes experienced in the dramatic Fort Tryon Park nearby...

AiF was commissioned to design a mountaintop retreat that would serve both and corporate leadership and friends for the owner, the CEO of a large commercial construction company from New York. The site is a rugged hilltop with unparalleled 360 degree views east to the Atlantic, west to the Caribbean, south to Nevis and north to the volcanic Mount Liamuiga, and the neighboring islands of St Barths, St Martins and Antigua. The sculptural design grows out of the land itself, cast in local concrete and stone, the caretaker’s cottage buried below the arrival court, guest wing buried into the hillside, pool and outdoor living projected out toward the Atlantic, and the main house and owners’ quarters rising out of the rocks to frame each of the majestic views uniquely. Daylight cross-breezes mingle against polished concrete with local aggregate and large boulders from the site to create an a soothing experience of living with and to withstand the land, the sea and the elements.

We like to really get to know our clients, and in this case, become lifelong friends after the project. AiF was retained to reconsider a 1970’s “ranch-burger” with a quirky and delightful owners’ wing designed by Andrew Geller in the early 1980’s, all set into a glorious 3 acre landscape.....

Our overall design approach to the restoration of this landmarked rowhouse is “rigorously eclectic”. Much of the original stone and woodwork was maintained and restored, and overall detail was edited, abstracted, reduced, clarified. The parlor floor was opened up to create a singular grand salon. Woodwork was refinished and extended, and painted a cool grey to recede, so that it’s not immediately clear what’s old and what’s new.
